Greenhouse Sports has helped me to gain more confidence in myself and demonstrate new leadership skills that I never had before. It has also helped me to discover new things that I now enjoy doing like basketball which is a really fun game where you can just take a break from everything and enjoy doing what you love.

Young people are at the heart of what we do, and now – even more – they have a voice to help further shape our work. We created the Greenhouse Sports Youth Advisory Board (YAB), which features representatives from our school programme participants who provide feedback and help make decisions about issues that affect them.
In our first year, coaches nominated participants to join the Youth Forum, and from there, Forum members voted a group of their peers into our Youth Council.
Youth Advisory Board members meet twice per year to provide feedback and take part in leadership activities. Our members on the Youth Council take part more regularly, and so far they have enjoyed media and storytelling training, have developed and executed participant-led research to aid our impact measures, and have added to the conversation around the structure of our holiday camps and programme.
Schools’ Celebration an event for Head Teachers and Heads of PE, held at St Cyprian’s Church. 12 of our YAB members undertook volunteering roles at this event. Sufyan and Scarlett lead roles in interviewing Coach Orlan (who will be part of Team England Basketball squad at the Commonwealth Games!).
OCNLR Level 1 Award in Developing Leadership Skills/Qualification No: 603/2689/X delivered by Rio Ferdinand Foundation hosted at Bacon’s College. This course is aimed at developing leadership skills of learners, enriching their employability skills and personal growth. This qualification provides learners with a greater knowledge of leadership skills and the confidence to apply and develop them in a variety of contexts such as work, education, leisure, and in the community. 10 YAB members attended the training. They meet our CEO in person and were also apart of consolation session ran by Oscar and Billie “Dream Fund Opportunity” People’s Postcode Lottery bid.
Our YAB took part in a focus group session with Bluewater. Energy X Nature Agenda for energyXnature ideation session. Bluewater is launching a photography competition for students aged 16-18. The theme of the photographs entered explore the theme of energy x nature. The purpose of the competition is to encourage young people to go outside, to find spaces where nature and energy meet - in or outside of a city. We believe that getting outside and appreciating our natural world can bring huge benefits to our mental health.
"We really enjoyed their company, and as much as it was a positive experience for them – we felt the same! The guys from MediaZoo have also been in touch this morning and said how much they enjoyed the session. We found them all extremely engaging and good fun and really appreciated their input. Lucinda Delaney" Executive Assistant and Marketing & Comms Coordinator Bluewater
Sufyan, Team Greenhouse Youth Advisory Board member was specially selected to take part in the HSBC World of Opportunity Programme at Twickenham Stadium. Sufyan was given two tickets to the HSBC London Sevens on Saturday 28th May. He took Idowu who is also a Youth Advisory Member to experience the amazing session. “I would just like to thank you and Greenhouse for the amazing opportunity you gave me yesterday. After the World of Opportunity workshop, I feel even more motivated to work within the sports industry and help others. Thank you again”. Sufyan
Thank you to Luc, Malachi, Harmony, Alysha, Nazha, Aksa, and Sufyan who volunteered their time to support the Marylebone Summer Festival on 19th June 2022. The event itself is a public event put on by the Howard de Walden Estate and is a family focused festival in the heart of Marylebone. Greenhouse Sports are the beneficiary charity and will be running a few engagement activities in Paddington Street Gardens, including Table Tennis and Basketball competitions. “Super quick note to say all of the YAB participants who volunteered yesterday at MSF were absolutely brilliant! They were a great reflection of the work Greenhouse Sports Coaches do with our young people and were genuinely inspiring to be around with a great enthusiasm, work ethic and infectious energy which helped us raise a huge amount of money and awareness for the charity through the event (exact £ TBC – we’ll keep you all posted)”. James Steven Greenhouse Sports
The Youth Advisory Board has also worked with some of the charity’s partners to gain additional skills and opportunities that will help them succeed later in life.
I applied to become a member of the Youth Advisory Board because I was interested in empowering the other young people in my programme by giving them a voice. During my time on the Youth Advisory Board, I want to create positive change that can be seen and felt in the daily lives of participants.
Scarlett , Youth Council member
Pre-Greenhouse, I found little to no motivation to get out of bed and pay attention in class, this changed following the introduction of the charity to me. After attending a few after school clubs I found that my life changed for the better. Suddenly, I was excited to wake up for school to attend breakfast clubs, concentrated in classes, saw a jump in my grades and made new friends.

I saw a jump in my grades and made new friends. Now being with Team Greenhouse for 6 years, the charity has helped me develop key attributes and qualities such as confidence, goal-setting and leadership skills, all being beneficial for the future. I also believe that the coaches in Greenhouse Sports help bring out the best in people and ensure they are doing well academically and almost act like mentors.
My favourite memory whilst playing table tennis with Greenhouse Sports was our trip to Isle of Wight. Whilst also playing table tennis, I was able to make new friends, try activities I’ve never tried before, get out of my comfort zone and have a fun time with my peers.
I applied to be part of the Greenhouse Youth Advisory Board for a number of different reasons. For a start, I was interested in giving my thoughts on how the charity could improve. On top of this, I believe that being a member could be an amazing opportunity to meet, interact and socialise with new people and additionally learn from them. Adding to this, I believe joining the Youth Advisory Board will help me develop new skills and be pushed out of my comfort zone.
Hobbies outside of sports: - Reading - Music - Anime - History - Watching Football
Future: I am not fully aware of what I want to commit to in the future, but I hope to study either Law or English Literature at university and from there on pursue the career I wish to choose.
Greenhouse sports has given me an insight into several skills from team building to communication skills. I’ve improved my interaction skills. Playing for this Team Greenhouse has enabled the growth of my communication abilities. I used to be an introvert, but since I began playing tennis in Year 7, it has enabled me to relieve stress from my studies while having fun with others
My name is Hayat Patel, I play Tennis at Greenhouse and my favourite athlete is Serena Williams. Greenhouse sports has given me an insight into several skills from team building to communication skills.
I’ve improved my interaction skills. Playing for this Team Greenhouse has enabled the growth of my communication abilities. I used to be an introvert, but since I began playing tennis in Year 7, it has enabled me to relieve stress from my studies while having fun with others. It has also enabled me to be both physically and mentally engaged, allowing me to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Learning a new shot or talent in Greenhouse has had a positive impact on my schooling since it has taught me to never give up or let go of my dreams or ideas. A favourite memory of mine with Greenhouse is when I played at the Stratford paddle club. This sport gave me an insight into what it's like to play tennis with a different racquet through different rules. I found it peculiar at first, but as I began to play more, I gained several new skills.
I applied to be a Youth Advisory member as I got informed about it by my Coach. Reading what I was entitled to, gave me an insight into what was included within the board. I found that this was an incredible opportunity to share my ideas on what could be improved about Greenhouse.
Other than tennis, I enjoy watching Netflix in my free time and hanging out with my friends. After I leave school, I aspire to study at UCL or the University of Oxford where I’ll be studying law.
Greenhouse sports has helped me become a better person in many ways. Firstly, greenhouse has helped me to develop my communication skills which has allowed me to become a more socialised person.as I can now communicate with my team mates effectively. Secondly, greenhouse sports have provided me with many different opportunities that have benefited me greatly.

Firstly, greenhouse has helped me to develop my communication skills which has allowed me to become a more socialised person.as I can now communicate with my team mates effectively. Secondly, greenhouse sports have provided me with many different opportunities that have benefited me greatly. one of those opportunities is having the chance to do my coaching level one course which has helped me develop my coaching and basketball skills as I got to see the sport from a coach’s view. And lastly, greenhouse has helped me develop my basketball skills over the years by having the opportunity to be coached by different greenhouse coaches which am I grateful to all of them because they have all taught me different skills.
the main reason I applied to the youth advisory board was because my coaches told me to apply. But after the interview I had found myself eager to be accepted on the youth advisory board because I knew that I wanted to make a change. As I am very passionate about encouraging more girls into playing basketball.as in our generation girls lack motivation and encouragement to play sports. Due to the lack of female coaches and the prioritization of the boys’ programmes which demotivate the girls into joining clubs. Moreover, I also joined the youth advisory board because I want to gain more knowledge about the organisation that provides us with amazing opportunities and programmes. Furthermore, by joining the youth advisory board I will be able to improve my leadership skills and develop my communication & organisation skills.
my hobby is going out, as I enjoy discovering new places and taking pictures of everywhere I go for memory. I also love sleeping & listening to music as it brings me comfort and peace.
I'm still unsure with what I want to do when I leave school, but I know for a fact that I want it to involve sports and healthcare.

Another great aspect of Greenhouse is that the team makes you feel like you're a part of a community and like you're a part of something bigger than yourself which has helped me make new friendships , learn new skills of the game as well as life skills and find a hobby where i can look back on my achievements and good memories of playing with the team.
my favourite memories of playing with greenhouse sports are the basketball games i've played from year 7 to now and looking back on how much i've progressed in the last 5 years. and also when we won games and trophies/medals which made me feel a sense of achievement and motivation to progress my skills even further.
I decided to be a part of the youth advisory board because when my coach suggested the opportunity to me I felt like it would be a good chance to develop more confidence in myself and gain new experiences and friendships with other people who may have similar interests to me. I also decided to sign up because I felt like it would be a good opportunity to pick up a new qualification to add to my CV so I can progress my learning further on the more technical side of things as well as playing actual sports.
Other than sports , some of my hobbies I enjoy doing are writing poems and stories as I enjoy using them as an outlet of my inner feelings and experiences. I also like to read a lot of books about various things, however my favorite books to read are crime fiction stories. Finally , my most recent hobby I picked up was writing music as I just enjoy writing raps and songs whenever I think of a new idea.
When i leave school i plan to go to 6th form first to do my a levels the once i've done them i plan to work for a year to earn some on my own personal savings and then i would like to go to university to study sports psychology and sports development as i was looking to do something in the sports industry such as a sports psychologist or even a basketball coach. However, I'm not exactly sure what specific career i want to go for in sport as of now.
Greenhouse Sports has helped me in many positive ways. For instance, attending morning sessions helps me manage my time and be awake for the rest of the day. Basketball at school also motivates me to get through the day and in the end, I will be rewarded with basketball. Greenhouse sports has also encouraged me to communicate with other coaches and players, building up my social skills and my links in the local community.

Greenhouse sports has made me come to the realization that relationship building with others is very important this is because good working relationships will make the activity you are doing more enjoyable and helps make professional connections. My favourite memory with greenhouse would be winning the U14 Brent tournament with my team and coach Alex.
I applied for the Youth Advisory Board because Coach Tony advised me to join the board as it would be beneficial for me and so that I could gain new skills. Now being a part of the youth advisory board I am thankful for the opportunities I have gotten in the short amount of time of my joining!
My hobbies outside of school include listening to music, reading books and watching crime documentaries 🙂
Favourite Athlete My favourite basketball player is Giannis Sina, a Greek professional basketball player who is known for his ball-handling skills and speed! It took him adversity, perseverance, determination, high-end work ethic, and self-belief to become an NBA champion. His contagious mentality motivates me to do better on a day-to-day basis.
Future Career: I am not sure as to what career I would like to pursue in the future but I know I want to stay in the field of sports as I enjoy it.
Greenhouse has helped me gain confidence and improve my technique in table tennis and football. Since joining the Youth Advisory Board, I am more confident in leading my peers. My favourite memory about Team Greenhouse was attending a holiday scheme at the Greenhouse centre and playing Table tennis.

I signed up to the Youth advisory board to improve my confidence, to have a positive impact with younger students and to work within a team coming up with strategies to better improve the experience of sports for Greenhouse students.
Hobbies: I enjoy gaming, developing my ICT skills. Favourite Athlete: Jordan Pickford. Future career: I am planning to go to college to do a BTEC in sports programme.
Greenhouse has helped me become the best I can be at basketball as well as becoming a hardworking individual and leader. My favourite memory with a greenhouse is definitely when I had the chance to meet James Harden. I will never forget that.

In my personal experience, it has proved undeniable that sport changes lives. When I joined the Greenhouse programme at my school a few years ago, there was no way that I could’ve known how deeply it would shape me: not only as a player, but as a person.
How has Greenhouse Sports helped you? In my personal experience, it has proved undeniable that sport changes lives. When I joined the Greenhouse programme at my school a few years ago, there was no way that I could’ve known how deeply it would shape me: not only as a player, but as a person. The sense of identity and community that my time in the programme has instilled in me is something I will never cease to be grateful for. Greenhouse has allowed me to meet and engage with others in a deeply meaningful way, and to enrich my worldview beyond the curriculum.
Firsthand, I have learned the importance of qualities such as resilience, cooperation and confidence past just their applications in the classroom. If it weren’t for the programme at my school, I don’t think I would’ve ever picked up a tennis racket. Yet being part of Greenhouse has given me something to look forward to at the start of each day, and a goal to work towards that feels greater than just myself.
Favourite memory of playing sport with Greenhouse: There’s no shortage of favourite memories to choose from when it comes to my time with the Greenhouse programme: from the incredible trips that we’ve had the opportunity to attend, or the tournaments that we’ve played in. However, despite this, there’s a seemingly ‘mundane’ one that sticks out. The memory comes from a nondescript afternoon a couple of years ago, when it had started raining torrentially during an after-school training session. Although most people would cut their losses, we begged our coach to keep the session going. By the end, everyone was soaked to the skin and freezing cold, but it didn’t really seem to matter all that much. Just the experience of being there, and of being able to play tennis, was what was important. For me, it’s the trivial moments like these that are the most significant.
Why did you apply to be a part of the Youth Advisory Board: I applied to become a member of the Youth Advisory Board because I was interested in empowering the other young people in my programme by giving them a voice. During my time on the Youth Advisory Board, I want to create positive change that can be seen and felt in the daily lives of participants. In particular, one of the issues which is especially close to my heart, is the representation of young women in sport. While Greenhouse already does a lot to support the access of young people to the programme, it would be my eventual goal to see a greater presence of women throughout it: not only as participants, but as coaches. I firmly believe in Greenhouse’s mission: to empower, connect, and unlock the potential of young people through sports, regardless of their background. From personal experience, and as I’m sure any participant across any of the programmes would tell you, sport has the capacity to change lives. I want to be involved in an organisation which pioneers and actively creates that change.
Hobbies and Interests: Outside of sports, my main hobbies are playing violin, reading, and volunteering/fundraising. I love to be involved in current affairs and various extracurriculars, though to be completely honest, the majority of my interests are sports-related.
Who is your favourite athlete? Naomi Osaka
What do you want to do when you leave school: I want to study Law/English Literature at university, and eventually, to qualify as a human rights lawyer.
Greenhouse sports have helped me find my new favourite hobby which is basketball - I was bouncing around from sport to sport but basketball is the first one that stuck. Plus it has helped me be more disciplined and punctual for training and in my everyday life.

My favourite Greenhouse Sport memory is probably when my team had an away match back in year 8 (2 years ago). We had won the game and I scored 31 points with over ten rebounds. I felt very accomplished.
I applied because I thought it would be a good opportunity for me. I also thought it would help with my speaking skills as I think of myself as a little shy in nature (plus my coach told me I should do it). Apart from basketball, my main hobby is music. I have played the trumpet, cornet, steel pans, trombone, and drums and I currently play the piano.
Future career: When I leave school, I would like to still be involved in basketball, like playing, coaching referring etc. My dream would be to work in the NBA.
