Greenhouse Sports began with a bold idea:

That sport could be a game-changer for young people facing deep inequalities – if it met them where they are.

It was started by our two founders. Read their story…

In West London, Michael de Giorgio launched a holiday table-tennis programme using facilities at St Paul’s School – offering young people on a local housing estate something positive during the school break. Meanwhile, Michael Sherwood, who saw firsthand how poverty can limit potential, started a table tennis club with the same purpose: to give young people structure, support, and a chance to thrive.

Both recognised something powerful: that sport was more than just an activity. It was a way to build trust, resilience, and belonging. And with the right person facilitating it, it could change a life.

Their paths aligned. Their efforts combined. And Greenhouse Sports was born – united by a common mission to break down barriers and change lives through sport and mentorship.

By 2004, Greenhouse had moved into schools full–time

Since then, we’ve supported over 60,000 young people across more than 70 schools in London, Leicester, and Portsmouth.

80% come from the most disadvantaged areas. And they don’t just play sport – they have a mentor in their corner that builds confidence, resilience, and life skills that shape their futures.

Today, both Michael de Giorgio and Michael Sherwood remain deeply involved in Greenhouse Sports. Their original belief – that sport, done right, can transform lives –continues to drive everything we do.

Three years ago, in 2022, we celebrated 20 years of supporting young people. Take a look at how far we’ve come!
