‘We should never have to choose between pubs and schools – but if we do, schools must come first’

The Prime Minister speaks of a ‘moral duty’ and ‘national priority’ to re-open schools in September. As our CEO Béatrice Butsana-Sita makes clear in yesterday’s City AM article, it is an absolute necessity for all children, especially for the vulnerable and those in disadvantaged areas, to immediately address the stark impact lockdown has had on growing inequality.

School closures spell huge long-term ramifications for the future of the children in this country. Abandoning reopening plans is not a risk we as a nation can afford to take.

Our charity works with schools in the most deprived areas of London. We know first-hand the challenges children in these areas have faced since lockdown began, and we believe schools re-opening and children returning to face to face teaching should be the national priority
