The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry launch the Greenhouse Centre

Avatar Greenhouse Sports

We were honoured to welcome The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry as guests at the launch of our Greenhouse Centre. Alongside our inspiring apprentice coach Khadra and Greenhouse Sports founder Mike de Giorgio and Chair Michael Sherwood, Their Royal Highnesses cut the ribbon, marking a new era for Greenhouse Sports.

The Centre will be a hub for the local community in Westminster’s Church Street Ward, providing a space for inclusive activities for all ages as well as being the new home for our existing table tennis club, supported by Table Tennis England. The facilities include homework rooms, communal spaces, and table tennis tables, as well as space to offer judo, sitting volleyball, touch tennis and more. During his speech at the launch event, Prince Harry drew attention to the important role that community centres play in providing a safe space and social opportunities for young people, and their power to unite the community.

Greenhouse Sports apprentice coach Khadra also spoke about how her Greenhouse Sports Coach Mohammed helped her when she was in school to recognise her own potential and find her future path.

When I met Coach Mo, he didn’t make me feel like I needed to fit into someone else’s idea of what I should be. He placed me as captain of the team. I think he saw that being loud and talkative was actually an asset and that I could be a leader.

- Khadra, Greenhouse Sports

During the event, The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry spoke to the young people of Greenhouse Sports to find out more about the impact the charity makes on the ground. They even got stuck in, playing a round of doubles with two young members of Greenhouse Sports table tennis programmes. Later in the evening, journalist and table tennis champion Matthew Syed played a round against Greenhouse Sports alum and professional table tennis player Darius Knight.

We would like to say a huge thank you to all of the generous supporters of the Centre for making this new chapter for the charity possible, including Sport England Lottery funding, players of the People’s Postcode Lottery and the London Marathon Charitable Trust.
