“Why are our volunteers are so important? I’ll tell you.”

My name is Kate Arthur and I am Volunteering and Programmes Coordinator for Greenhouse Sports. As part of #VolunteersWeek (1-7th June), a campaign which recognises all the great work that volunteers do across the UK, I am kicking off a series of blogs from some of our own volunteers as they talk about their experiences with us and the incredible young people on our programmes.

I really enjoy my job and it’s a privilege to work with people who are willing to give up their free time to help a young person to grow and develop. I joined the charity in January 2014 – I had always been really sporty and involved in lots of charity events, so I was really excited to have the opportunity to work for a sports development charity and combine my favourite things!

I provide programme support to our 45 mainstream coaches and help with all of the day-to-day logistics of running an effective programme. The second part of my role is coordinating our growing group of 75 active volunteers. I meet all of our new volunteers and help to match their interests and experiences with the opportunities we have available, and then once signed up I work with the volunteer as the key contact to ensure their time spent with us is effective and enjoyable.

The absolute best part of my job is the people I have the opportunity to meet and work with everyday. Everybody I meet is so passionate about Greenhouse Sports and the power of sports to change the lives of young people. It’s always really exciting to meet new volunteers and find out more about them. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting people from all walks of life and all areas of the world who want to pass on their love of sport to young Londoners.

This is one of the many reasons volunteers are so important to Greenhouse Sports. As well as their passion, our volunteers bring in a new perspective, different experiences and diversify our programmes. Those assisting coaches are another role model for our young people to learn from. While those who help support programmes in administrative roles, work really hard to ensure all of our participants have the best opportunities and the most enjoyable time possible.

I’d like to take this opportunity to say a MASSIVE thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers.  We really appreciate the hours you give to us each week and we hope you enjoy your time spent with us. It’s been an absolute pleasure to meet you all and see the enthusiasm you have for Greenhouse Sports’ work.
