I have been volunteering every other week and on some Saturdays at the volleyball programme at Ernest Bevin College, Wandsworth. I got involved with the charity because my close friend Lucio Semedo, who coaches at Greenhouse London Pioneers basketball team, was in a same situation as me about five years ago – in a full time office job and not really happy that he couldn’t get to play ball and be around the sport he loves very much. Lucio recommended getting in touch with Greenhouse to volunteer as a coach. He always spoke very highly of Greenhouse Sports, and seeing him succeed and enjoy coaching has definitely inspired me to try it myself and I love it.
I joined Greenhouse Sports volleyball coach Ashley Trodden around six months ago. I was pretty nervous on my first day. I wasn’t sure what to expect or how I was going to go about being part of a team and assist a great coach I had heard so much about! Greenhouse’s Volunteer Coordinator Kate Arthur was there to meet me. Both Kate and Ashley made me feel very welcome and they have been very supportive ever since – they are always there to help and point me in the right direction.
I love the fact that I get to be around the sport that I love so much. Being a volunteer especially for Greenhouse Sport, is a real privilege. The time at Ernest Bevin also allows me to get some hands on coaching and playing experience, and I can learn from a great coach and also meet new people. The first time I was called ‘Sir’ or ‘Coach’ was a great feeling, it made me smile for a few days knowing that the kids I get to work with recognise me as being part of their team.
I am very lucky that my employer allows me to finish early on Tuesdays to go and do what I really enjoy. I still have to make up the time I have missed due to volleyball, but it’s all worth it in the end. Since I started volunteering with Greenhouse Sports, I have been proudly telling people about it. I tell them how rewarding it is and how far Greenhouse would go to accommodate their volunteers and staff in general. . I love being part of Greenhouse as I love what they about – helping kids fulfil their potential through sport – I think we need more of this and hopefully I too will have a positive impact on young people’s lives.
If I were to describe my volunteering experience in one word? Fulfilling.
