Raine’s Foundation School table tennis is thriving!
My name is Stephen Gertsen, I am Senior Head Coach at Raines Foundation School and it’s been an exciting couple of months for our young people in our Greenhouse Sports table tennis programme. Our Thursday evening community club is now one of the best table tennis clubs in London with around 30 attendees per week – it attracts participants from all over London and our Raine’s pupils get to practice with some of the top juniors in the country! Our older participants give up their time to coach the younger ones and they are showing great mentoring and leadership skills.
I am so proud of all our Raines Foundation School table tennis participants who are showing amazing dedication during coaching, which we hope will be shown to have transferred to the classroom and around school! We make a conscious effort to develop STEP (social, thinking, emotional and physical) skills in our young people, and do not just focus on being good at table tennis!
Recently we hosted a challenge match against Greenhouse Sports Sacred Heart programme in which we ran out comfortable winners by 109-46 in the boys category and 6-3 in the girls category. Ten Raine’s Foundation School table tennis pupils were selected for the Essex Open, eight boys and two girls. Stand out performances came from Kian and Shaun who reached the quarter finals stage of a ranking event with some brave performances. Raine’s Foundation School also hosted our first UKCC Coaching Level 2 course last weekend – our apprentices and volunteers were part of the course, and our pupils had chance to interact with coaches from all over England.
