Prudential up for Better Society Awards for support of Greenhouse Sports basketball

Prudential plc has been shortlisted by the Better Society Awards for their support of Greenhouse Sports in both the Partnership with a National Children’s Charity and Commitment to a Young Community categories.  The winners will be revealed at the Awards Ceremony, held at the London Marriott Hotel on 11 May.

Prudential primarily supports the Greenhouse Sports basketball programmes in mainstream schools and their commitment over the past five years has allowed those programmes to flourish. When Prudential’s partnership with Greenhouse Sports began, 680 participants across seven school programmes were participating in intensive basketball programmes delivered by inspirational coaches. Now, participation has more than doubled, with the charity engaging 1,546 young people across 15 Prudential-supported basketball programmes based in both schools and the community. 83% of Greenhouse Sports participants benefiting from Prudential’s funding live in above average deprivation.

Yet Prudential’s support of Greenhouse Sports has gone above and beyond a core financial grant. Last year, they provided opportunities for 92 of our young people to partake in an international basketball camp in Bosnia that broadened their horizons. They also developed a bespoke community programme through their sponsorship of Prudential RideLondon, where Greenhouse Sports participants were given the opportunity to take part in the 46 and 100 mile events. Prudential supplied the 22 participants with new bicycles and equipment, and provided maintenance and employability training to them in advance of the iconic event. This programme, called PruGOals, was a great success, and is continuing into 2017 with a view to extending the opportunities to 2018 and beyond.

“Prudential have been true partners to Greenhouse Sports. The opportunities they have provided for the young people in our programmes have not only encouraged them as athletes, but have helped develop crucial life skills that will support them through their transition to adulthood.” John Herriman, Chief Executive at Greenhouse Sports.
