Players of the People’s Postcode Lottery support Greenhouse Sports
Greenhouse Sports’ innovative and dynamic approach to using sport to encourage personal development among young Londoners has attracted £200,000 in support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery. The funding will enable Greenhouse Sports to invest further in its vision that every young person deserves the chance to succeed.
“I am so pleased to be able to count players of People’s Postcode Lottery among our supporters,” said Greenhouse Sports’ CEO and founder, Michael de Giorgio. “The funding will certainly help us continue building on what we have achieved over the last 12 years in terms of growing and developing our programmes and reaching more young people.”
Clara Govier, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “Funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery will only benefit the continued success of Greenhouse Sports. We look forward to seeing the number of young people involved in this programme increase over the coming year.”
Over the last year, Greenhouse Sports launched three new full-time programmes bringing the total number to 51 (36 secondary schools, 11 Special Educational Needs schools and four community clubs). During the 2014-15 academic year, Greenhouse Sports coaches provided 444,000 hours of engagement before, during and after school and at weekends.
The coaches act as mentors, helping their participants to become more confident, more engaged and more likely to become positive influences in their families, schools and communities. The charity’s recent survey revealed that over 78% of participants also showed a marked improvement in fitness – an important impact given the current concerns about childhood obesity – and attended more days of school through the year than their non-Greenhouse Sports classmates.
A strong partnership between Greenhouse Sports and host schools is vital for the on-going success of the programmes. A recent survey by the charity of partner schools showed:
- 93% agreed that Greenhouse Sports coaches know how to help pupils achieve their personal best
- 92% agreed that Greenhouse Sports coaches help pupils to develop personal skills (their social, thinking, emotional, and physical skills)
- 92% agreed that Greenhouse Sports coaches help pupils to become more confident in their approach to life
One school principal commented: “I am overwhelmed by the success and impact that the (Greenhouse Sports) programme has had at our Academy. There are a large number of students for whom basketball has been their only ticket out of trouble or exclusion. If it wasn’t for this initiative, some students would have perhaps never realised their potential.”
