Greenhouse Sports participants selected for the London Youth Games
Congratulations to the Norwood School Greenhouse Sports basketball participants who were selected to represent their boroughs in the 2015 London Youth Games last weekend. Joel Barnaby and Hamdi Ahmed were selected to represent Lambeth Team, and Mariam Khalil was selected to represent the Croydon Team. Both teams all did really well to reach the quarter-finals.
The London Youth Games have a rich history of providing high quality sporting competitions for young Londoners. They have developed significantly since their inception in 1977 and now include a Regatta as well as competitions for primary schools and disabled athletes.
As well as inspiring more than half a million Londoners to get involved in competitive sport, the Games have contributed to the development and discovery of many international athletes. At the last summer Olympics three of GB’s gold medallists – Mark Hunter, Christine Ohuorugu and Bradley Wiggins – were former LYG competitors. London 2012 saw 43 former participants of the Games involved including winning nine gold medals.
Other famous London Youth Games alumni include basketballer Luol Deng, cyclist Bradley Wiggins, footballers Rio Ferdinand and Ledley King, squash player Alison Waters and tennis player Anne Keothavong.
