Greenhouse Sports names new Chief Executive

London-based charity co-founder Michael de Giorgio to remain committed Trustee and ambassador

John Herriman has been named the new Chief Executive of Greenhouse Sports, a London-based sport for social change charity. Herriman joins the charity from the National Association of Head Teachers, and will take the reins from co-founder and current Chief Executive Michael de Giorgio.

Chair of Greenhouse Sports Trustee Board Jeffrey Berman said: “Finding a successor to a co-founder and Chief Executive as dedicated and inspirational as Michael de Giorgio was never going to be easy and therefore the Trustees are particularly pleased we were able to persuade John to become our new CEO.  His blend of skills and experiences – heading operations of the diving and bomb disposal group in a 20 year naval career, followed by several years in the commercial sector and more recently working closely with head teachers – makes him ideally suited to take on the challenging role of leading Greenhouse Sports. We have every confidence his experience and leadership will help guide Greenhouse Sports forward in this exciting stage of our development.”

Greenhouse Sports has gone from strength to strength since it was founded more than a decade ago, engaging young people through sport, and identifying inspirational coaches to act as role models for children in some of London’s most disadvantaged communities. Michael de Giorgio will continue to be a key member of the team, remaining as a trustee and taking on an ambassadorial role for the organisation. “I am thrilled with the appointment of John,” he said. “We have huge ambitions for the charity and remain committed to delivering the best sport programmes possible for young people across the capital for many years to come. Charities should set challenging objectives, not just in terms of outcomes for those we work with, but also in terms of efficiency and governance. John is a perfect fit in terms of these ambitions.”

Herriman, who starts at Greenhouse Sports in August 2016 said: “It’s a privilege to take over from Michael who, as founding Chief Executive, has shown how sport can make a real difference to children’s life chances and I look forward to building on his great work. I believe strong role models, like Greenhouse Sports coaches, can help children find that spark that guides them for the rest of their lives and I am excited to work with staff, schools and young people to take Greenhouse Sports on the next step of its journey.”
