Volleyball boys target 3rd Youth Games indoor title
Wandsworth boys volleyball team, made up of members of Greenhouse Sports’ Ernest Bevin College volleyball academy, booked their place at the London Youth Games finals after a hard fought day’s play at SCORE Centre. Nikki Strachan, team manager, said: “There’s an expectation, even within Wandsworth, that we’re going to automatically make Crystal Palace, so it kind of gets harder and harder each year as the standard of volleyball improves around London.”
The boys team are competing for their third London Youth Games volleyball crown in a row. Wandsworth qualified via a round robin competition against some strong sides, including Enfield and Richmond. However, they proved too good and won all their matches without conceding more than 14 points in a game.
Strachan, who was named London Youth Games coach of the year at February’s Active Wandsworth Sports Award, said: “They’re very good players. In terms of player for player, I don’t think there is any other borough that has as much consistency. They train hard, they’re very committed and very team orientated as well.”
Well done to the team and best of luck for the final which will take place on Saturday 4 July at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.
