Greenhouse Sports celebrates launch of Coach Core London consortium
Coach Core, an apprentice coaching scheme run by the Royal Foundation, launched their new Coach Core London consortium this October in a bid to give more young people in London the opportunity to develop careers as sport coaches. Originally started as a pilot scheme between The Royal Foundation and Greenhouse Sports in 2012 and 2014, the Coach Core programme is now run nationally by the Royal Foundation, with Greenhouse Sports partaking as an organisation that hires and mentors London-based Coach Core apprentices alongside five other consortium organisations. The launch, held at Lord’s Cricket Ground and attended by our three new Greenhouse Sports apprentice coaches, included coaching demonstrations and some guest appearances from the likes of Olympic gold medallist Max Whitlock as well as HRH Prince Harry.
In their first few weeks on the programme, our three Greenhouse Sports Coach Core apprentices have been busy going through inductions, spending time with their Greenhouse Sports coach mentors, and attending sessions with the apprenticeship training provider to understand more about the programme. Our three apprentices this year join 14 other young coaches-in-training employed on the programme by London consortium members West Ham United Foundation, Fulham FC Foundation, London Youth Rowing, Marylebone Cricket Club and London Rugby League Foundation.
For Greenhouse Sports, the opportunity to provide a pathway for young Londoners to learn new skills through sport that can help them reach their full potential is central to our mission. Our graduates of the one-year apprentice programme have gone on to continued success, with some securing coaching jobs and others going on to university. Three former Coach Core apprentices, who started their sport journeys as Greenhouse Sports participants themselves, have remained in the Greenhouse Sports fold, following an extended coach training scheme that was generously supported by Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
