Celebrating the success of our young people at Samuel Rhodes School
Panathalon Football London Regional Plate
Young people from our multi-sports programme at Samuel Rhodes School won the Panathalon Football London Regional Plate as representatives of the Borough of Islington.
Panathalon provides a structure for SLD (severe learning difficulties) football with more opportunities and matches for all. Teams from 16 London Boroughs across two age groups – under 13’s and under 16’s – compete in regional heats, with the top two teams from the North, South, East and West London regions qualifying for the finals of either the Champions Cup or the Plate competition.
Collecting the trophy for the second year running, Islington Borough were unbeaten all season with a combination of both the under 13’s and under 16’s teams’ results.
To add to this fantastic achievement, both teams were nominated and awarded ‘Special School Team of the Year 2017’ at the Islington School Sports Awards. Students were joined by parents to collect the award at the Islington Town Hall from the Mayor of Islington and National England Boxing Champion, Cherrelle Brown.
London Youth Games Para-Athletics Competition
Greenhouse Sports coach at Samuel Rhodes School, James Cresser took two of his young people to the London Youth Games Para-Athletics Competition on Wednesday 28th June. A huge well done to Alfie and Maame, who represented Islington Borough and both won bronze medals.
Maame was third fastest and achieved a bronze medal over three heats in the 100m sprint against 18 other London boroughs. Alfie also came third over two heats, competing in the 200m sprint.
Opportunities for competition allow Greenhouse Sports participants to work towards a goal and learn the vital skills such as resilience, confidence and leadership that come from participating in sport.
