Case Study: Meet Joanna

Photos do not relate to this case study

Joanna started playing basketball with Greenhouse Sports in 2012. Joanna used to get into a lot of trouble before joining our programme at her academy. She says her Greenhouse coach helped her to understand the importance of behaving well at school using our STEP Framework for development. Joanna now acts as a role model for other players: “A good captain has to set an example and help younger players to improve and better themselves through sport.”

Although she had played basketball previously at the school, Joanna told us that she prefers the inclusive nature of our programme. She particularly enjoys the way her Greenhouse Sports coach offers individualised coaching programmes for each player alongside tactical coaching for the team as a whole allowing participants to work on their social, thinking, emotional and physical skills.

Joanna has progressed quickly over the last two years, moving up through the leagues from her local borough to national league standard and being selected to train with the England Development Squad for Under 15s. Joanna is also now captain of her Under 16s community team in the national league.

Joanna qualified as a Level 1 Coach and Officiator, and helps coach the primary and Year 7 players twice a week, enabling her to develop confidence and leadership qualities. Joanna is applying to study A-Levels and continue developing her sporting skill at a leading basketball academy. Ideally, Joanna would like to be a professional player, but she is also interested in physiotherapy and sports science. We wish Joanna the best of luck for the future and hope that all the skills that she learned with us help her to achieve her goals.
