Bringing young people from mainstream and SEN schools together

Special Educational Needs and Mainstream young people

In May 2015, the Greenhouse Sports SEN team put on an Inclusive Holiday Programme involving both mainstream and special educational needs (SEN) participants – the first of its kind for Greenhouse Sports. The event was truly inclusive, providing activities that encouraged all participants to interact and play together. The SEN and Impact teams worked together to evaluate the outcomes of the event. Here are some of the key findings:

Mainstream and SEN young people ranging from 6 to 15 years old took part in the holiday programme, with support from Greenhouse Sports coaches and office staff volunteers. 94% of those surveyed agreed or strongly agreed that they enjoyed the event.

At the end of the day, we also asked participants how comfortable they were playing sports in mixed ability groups. Here’s what we found:

  • 63% answered ‘more confident than before’
  • Of those who had never participated in mixed groups, 83% answered ‘more confident than before’
  • 60% of the office staff who helped out feel more confident working with young people with SEN since the event

This event was a positive experience for all involved and hopefully the first of many Inclusive events aimed at bringing our young people together.
